This is so very true and hilarious as well! The internet truely has changed how we live, how we entertain ourselves, and how we express our creativity. I have always tried to somewhat stay away from getting to involved with the internet (no more then I have to). I would say that I am not near as "tech savy" as many people, but I do find myself from time to time on the internet for hours doing a large variety of things. In my opinion, it is making our society more unsocial as a whole and hopefully this trend does not continue. One day, we could possibly have zero interaction with other people face to face at all, something to think about...
John, Thank you for your post! You are very right in your opinion and perspective on the issue of internet addiction. From an article by CNN.com published in 2000 it was determined that many marriages and careers are terminated by this addiction. According to the research, this is very similar to how gambling effects people and leads to serious mental disorders (bi-polar,depression, and obsessively compulsive). These will be discussed more in detail throughout this blog in the next few weeks. For further reading please refer to the article. I agree with John and this very funny cartoon. Society as a whole is becoming less and less social in person and more social online. All you have to do is take a look at Facebook to see what I mean. You can log onto Facebook and find out more information (more often than not complaints) than you need to know about anyone unless you are good friends with them. What's even more sad is many of them are people you hardly know; I have 208 friends on Facebook, I do not understand how or why people have upwards of 1000! I keep in touch with my close friends in person and use Facebook more to laugh at the ridiculous posts people have on their account, I am sure I'm not the only one who does this.
Matthew, Thank you for commenting on our site! I absolutely agree that Facebook is something that is consuming a lot of many people's free time. I also have around 400 friends on my Facebook account and recently I have found myself deleting a lot of my so called "friends" because I don't really talk to most of them. I personally do not want my news feed on Facebook to be filled with a bunch of people's stories that I don't care about, because I don't know who they are. But most people probably accept anyone as their friend just to see how many they can get.
Let me start by saying this is absolutely true. With technological advances in these such illustrations, society is becoming less and less social in face to face interactions. It is easier to connect with multiple people simultaneously with Facebook and Twitter. We eventually (way down the road) could lose mostly all face to face interactions because of technological advances. Crazy to think about.
Drastically yes, but I would hope we would still want to go grocery shopping, try on clothes when shopping and want to go to restaurants and bars to socialize. The internet makes it insanely efficient for communicating with mass audiences, but i don't think it will ever replace the true act of person to person interaction.
I'm not going to be one to disagree. That is a great realization of what is happening to the majority of our generation and younger. Be it on the computer, tablet, or phone. I feel it's more everything is done on the phone now, so instead of people staying couped up at their houses or wherever on computers they're still out being productive while doing all of those things via mobile devices now. Myself for example, nothing on there do I really do sitting at a computer, only time I slouch over a computer is when I'm doing school work.
Good post, love simplistic yet gets the point across.
Great point Daniel, we have so many mobile possibilities to connect to the internet while doing other things at the same time. If everyone actually took advantage of all these things, I doubt internet addiction would be such a problem and looked at in the future to be so relevant. If your on a treadmill for 2 hours a day with your tablet online, I would say this is a good aspect of internet. This would be helping America's obesity issue rather than being looked at negatively.
Hilarious cartoon. Very true as we move through the digital age. There will be no more interaction with people as everything will take place on the computer. People will not even have to leave their house to work. I agree with Daniels comment, I also hate being on this thing unless I'm doing school work, messing on ebay or getting paid!
That cartoon makes it look like listening to music or watching a movie etc on the computer is not fun... but it is. Coming from a person with a self-declared internet addiction, I do not necessarily think internet interactions are a bad thing. Yeah, it is different than how it use to be for our parents but we also probably interact with more people in a day because of the internet than our parents could over the phone or in person. Talking to so many people helps us learn how to deal with different types of personalities and in a way, people's ruthlessness on the internet can toughen people's skin. Just because our use of the internet seems obsessive now does not mean it will not be considered completely normal in the future and something else will take it's place on the obsessive part.
Wow, I agree on what everyone is talking about. It sad because we probably know someone who does that and you really want them to do something about their life but they just ignore you. There is better things to do in this world people! I am not suggesting going out and go crazy. But doing something that make a difference in you and friends and your family.
The 2 sayings come to mind: "Everything in moderation and too much of something is never a good thing." Addictions are normal activities that people take to an extreme. I think the majority of us can control ourselves, but then again, people out of control usually don't actually know they are.
It's great to see that everyone is taking such a passionate stand on staying active and not relying on the internet on a daily bases. But keep in mind, just because we are not at a computer, doesn't mean we are not online. Our phones create a very new connection to the world that society has never had before. Email, applications, facebook, twitter, and MUCH more is on our phones BECAUSE of the internet connection. I bet MANY of us check some kind of internet connected feature on our phone at least 2 times an hour. Please answer the questions above to see the results.
A true depiction of how internet has changed our lifestyles. From the way we interact with others to the way we entertain ourselves. It definetely has become a source of addiction for many people. But as it is known, Too much of something is never good for anyone. A balancing act is vital to maintain a healthy relationship with this ever growing and immense technology.
I just laughed pretty hard at that picture. It's so true, it's weird how things have changed so much since we were younger, maybe about 10-15 years ago. People now a days don't like to talk on the phone unless it is about something important, and would rather receive a text, email, or message on a social networking site. There is no face to face interaction anymore it's all done with screen names, profile pictures, and text boxes with messages being sent back and forth. I wonder what the next 10 years of technological innovation will bring us.
Wow this sadly sums up the last couple of years. The technology that we have now has limited our ability to communicate effectively and talk face to face. Some people see only the positives of technology but there are also downsides too.
Humans definitely need to learn how to use technology responsibly and seek out help if addiction occurs. Adapting to change will be important for future generations.
This is a sad reality we live in. That the internet is becoming one of the most important ways for doing everyday life. I work with middle and high school students and am just amazing at how addicted these children are to the internet. They are constantly checking Facebook, twitter, etc. We were at a conference and the girls would not quit using their phones. I ended up having to take them from them and they were almost in tears. Society is getting more and more "addicted" to the internet. Now, if you want to do anything, pay your bills, contact a company, make appointments, etc. you have access to do it on the internet, and some businesses even require you to use the internet instead of paper. How can we control "internet addiction" when society is telling us everyday to use the internet more and more?
This funny catoon is so true. As the computers and other thechnical devices is being higher and higher developed and the internet becoming more and more popular, instead of getting information from the newspaper, chatting with friends face to face, and some other interacted entertainments we did in the old time, people could sit in front of a computer and do all of these kinds of entertainments nowadays. As a result, more and more people could not live without a computer or high-tech devices and internet. I think some people is getting addicted to the internet because the internet is so powerful that many things they want to do could be satisfied by the internet.
This cartoon is small but says a great deal! We can pretty much do anything and everything we want on the internet and on our computers. It shows how the world has changed over the years regarding technology. We can talk to people, listen to music, watch a movies, etc with a click of a button. Back then, it would take double or triple the time that it takes us now to get these things accomplished.
This is a funny article but it also shows how we are starting to lean towards a master device that will be able to do everything we need it to do. This could also be a problem with the addiction aspect because you would never be able to get away from that device and it would be a constant presence. I also see that the problem of internet addiction will get much worse before it gets better.
Very interesting idea. I think the most harmful problem with internet addiction is the way it has hindered our generation's ability to interact with one another. I was recently at a job fair and was really intrigued at the fact that upperclassmen were struggling just to start and hold a normal conversation with employers. I think a lot of this stems from our addiction to the internet and particularly social media.
This is hilarious and true. The picture sums everything up. 15 years ago people wouldn't have dreamed of watching movies online. I have to agree with Ross who commented above saying how it has limited are ability to communicate effectively. The older generation is more well rounded on that subject then we are.
This cartoon is unfortunately very true in my opinion. The internet has become a way of life for us and we cannot live without it. We have it on our phones at home and practically everywhere we go. Children no longer go outside to play with their friends, instead they would rather play with their computer or be on a social networking site.
Thank you for all your posts! But, make sure you click on the other tabs (top, right side) to understand MUCH more about internet addiction. I think some of your ideas will be confirmed and you will more thoroughly understand the idea behind this addiction. Thank you !
