Why is this relevant to the topic of internet addiction?
I have been watching this show for a long time now and it seems to get more and more funny. It took a long time to get the grasp of the show, but then it grew on me. After doing research on internet addiction I began to associate many aspects of the effects, symptoms and lifestyles with this show. I think Sheldon is the best example, but the following bullets will attach specific meaning to the shows above:
World Wide Connection: The first link establishes the extreme time that people invest in the internet and how exciting it could be. Sheldon mentioned getting goose-bumps; this is a physical reaction to the excitement that was created from achieving a goal that was made possible by an internet connection. This also includes some of the ways that information is sent via the internet that we talked about in class.
World of War craft cyber robbery 1: The second link is a dramatic response from Sheldon when his game got cyber attacked and he acted like his entire world was crashing around him. His reaction defines an extreme sense of anxiety from this attack on his computer via the internet that he took extremely personally.
2 – He mentioned 3,000 hours spent online and playing the game and that is was almost a waste of time. Well from a non-gamer perspective it was. They actually use the game to try and find the person who “robbed” him – ironically. They talk about a bird that they named Glen in the game like he was an actual bird or even friend, thus humanizing something that is just an internet based video game. This signifies how significant playing this game was to all of them and what a large part of their lives it was. They call it a crisis and how Sheldon thinks of it much more than a “game.”
Virtual Internet Gaming Obsession: They all act like they are actually in a fight, sitting all around with their laptops. Sheldon mentioned 2nd life and how they can go swimming since they are so sweaty. This is another aspect of how a person’s virtual life encompasses their real life.
HALO gaming: Another extremely verbal and realistic acting cyber fight scene, of which, the guys completely ignore the group of girls when they talk to them. This signifies how focused they are and how real life outside the dimension of cyber gaming is overlooked and neglected.
Just for fun Link: Is to attach the comedic aspect of technology, internet, geeky-ness, gaming, and anal retentiveness of fun - extremely educated professionals when interacting with “normal” friends.
I think throughout the entire running of this show one could entertain the idea that internet addiction could be associated in one way or another in most of the episodes. I am not saying that they are addicted in anyway, but one could speculate. On the other hand, every character stays grounded most of the time with his or her society, goals, lifestyle and does not neglect themselves. Other than the following link – a look at how PENNY DOES GET ADDICTED TO INTERNET GAMING: I will let you infer the obvious relations to this topic.
This link really hits on how vurtual worlds effect people's: work, attitude, hygene, avoiding freinds, time and perspectives:
Effects of Online Gaming on Penny - Lenord says she is addicted and makes many points we talked about in this blog of why people get addicted to the internet and she ignores him.
